Prohibition
Prohibition was an act to get rid of all alcohol in 1919. Prohibition was instituted with the ratification ofthe Eighteenth amendment in 1919. The amendment made it illegal to sell, manufacture, or ship alcohol anywhere in the United States. Congress passed the Volstead Act to enforce the law but most large cities were uninterested. Gangsters would bootleg beer and have secret clubs where beer could be sold. Many people still found ways to get and drink beer secretly. Soon, people repealed prohibition and the Twenty First amendment was passed allowing states to set their own regulations for alcohol.
